Project Experience
tunnels and underground structures

JEC has provided design and constructibility review, and construction management for New Jersey Transit’s new “Trans-Hudson Express” Tunnel (THE Tunnel).  The twin tunnels were to be 28 ft in diameter, and 10 miles long.  Excavation methods were to include Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), sequential excavation, cut-and-cover, and drill-and-blast.

For the English Channel Tunnel, UK Undersea Crossover Cavern, between England and France, JEC reviewed the definitive design and constructability of the undersea rail crossover cavern and prepared a report with recommendations for modifications.

One of the largest underground projects under construction in the U.S.A. for City Water Tunnel No. 3, with New York City, Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP), for Contract TCM-51 Construction Management and Inspection Services and for Contract PEDS - Professional Engineering Design Services & Technical Engineering Support.

Geotechnical engineering and construction management related services for construction of City Water Tunnel No. 3, in Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan.  Provided in-depth expertise for the review and analyses of construction methods, procedures and equipment; review and analyses of specifications and requests for change-orders; Expert Review Board services; management of field drilling activities, laboratory testing, and the development of a Rock Core Data Management System.

The Cole Park Detention Vaults consisted of storm water detention vaults and related by-pass tunnels, access shafts and ancillary structures provide drainage outfall and short-term detention for peak storm water flows that result from drainage improvements associated with the reconstruction of U.S. Route 75, North Central Expressway

South Boston Piers area of Boston.  Concrete immersed tube alternative.  Final design and construction services for the immersed tube technology and open-cut cofferdam construction.

Central Artery highway tunnel projects totaling more than $850 million in construction costs.  JEC completed the structural design, plans and specifications for cut-and-cover vehicular highway tunnels for the Central Artery-North Area/Charlestown District and Bird Island Flats in Boston, Massachusetts:

The Central Artery Bird Island Flats Tunnel located near Logan International Airport, consists of cut-and-cover tunnels with a series of boat sections and at-grade highways.  The cut-and-cover tunnels will carry two roadways, I-90 Eastbound and I-90 Westbound, connecting an immersed tube tunnel at the southern end of Bird Island Flats to the existing Route 1A in East Boston

The Central Artery, North Area (CANA) Tunnel located in the Charlestown District of Boston, tunnel carrying Route 1 Northbound will carry 3 lanes of traffic with provisions for 5 traffic lanes; Route 1 Southbound tunnel consists of 3 traffic lanes with provisions for one lane.

For the Washington Metro in Washington, D.C.,  27 tunnel sections, totaling more than $1 billion in construction costs. Joined by Mayreder Consult of Austria, JEC developed conventional design The Fort Totten Station and Tunnels was the first application of NATM in soft ground constructed in the United States.  The project received international recognition for the first NATM soft ground subway station and tunnels constructed in the United States, and was selected by the American Consulting Engineers Council (ACEC) for Engineering Excellence for "NATM Construction of Washington's Fort Totten Station", 1992
